Madarsa Education! Is It Significant Today?

0
Madarsa Education system is an old system existing in India for a long time especially focused towards Muslims following the religion of Islam. Likewise schools, convents and other educational institutions, Madarsa too has remained one of the important institution for education in the country. Like the primary schools, the madarsas are existing in almost every parts of the country especially in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Orrisa, Assam and Maharashtra where children take education. The noted institutions, namely Darul Uloom Deoband and Nadwat Uloom are higher level institutions for students qualified from madarsas.

If we see in the context of Kishanganj or the entire Seemanchal region of Bihar, Madarsas are existing at large numbers. Although the Madarsa education was not considered of any significance in the regime of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), but all of sudden it became a matter of lure for Muslims during the Nitish Kumar led NDA Government in Bihar. Reason was the mass appointment of Madarsa qualified students in Primary Schools of the state. Usually the students qualifying from Madarsa Board get high marks, hence they had beaten the College and University qualified students.

Despite its distinct existence, Madarsa education had remained a part of controversy. Madarsa and its modus operandi make it a religious mode of education among Muslims and somehow it is marginalized by the mainstream as well. The students, teachers and aalims (scholars) associated with Madarsa Education System often complain about the biased approach of the government towards them and also the people from various sections of the society. Let us take a critical analysis of the Madarsa Education System and its prons and cons.

Discrimination against Madarsa unfair! Encouragement from all is Essential

India is a country of villages, about 70 percent of the population resides in remote areas. Still major part of the country doesn’t have quality schools or modes of offering contemporary education. The state and central government is still unable to make the entire population of the area educated in such areas. Many of such areas are dominated by Muslim populations. We are expecting ourselves to see among the developed economies of the world, which is not possible without complete education across the country.

Madarsa Education System is a wonderful alternate for the schools at primary, middle and higher levels. Along with religious education, the madarsas are offering contemporary education to Muslim boys and girls. The students from madarsa background are eligible for admission in higher education in many universities such as Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Jamia Hamdard (JH) and Maulana Azad National Urdu Open University (MANUU). Hence, let us stop discriminating with Madarsa Education System and people associated with madarsas. The students and scholars belonging to Madarsa Education System do have good brains and they are capable of making a great contribution to the country. Hence, the government and non government organizations including common citizen of India should come forward to encourage the Madarsa Education System as it is contributing to enhance the literacy rate of the country.

Caretakers of Madarsa Education System should change their approach

The biggest hurdle before the facelift of Madarsa Education System is its caretakers who follow age-old customs and traditions. We are currently in the 21st Century, where the world is dependent on computers and electronic gadgets. At the same time, along with religious education the contemporary education in various fields have come into existence. The caretakers of Madarsa Education System should understand the importance of contemporary education and the modern subjects like Computer. The knowledge of English, Mathematics and Science is also essential in today’s world.

Somewhere, it is found that caretakers of Madarsas don’t give proper importance to contemporary subjects and the students qualified from the Madarsas / Universities face difficulty in settling themselves properly. In short, by striking a balance between old subjects and modern subjects with certain amount of technological knowledge, a Madarsa passed out student can be a complete package and settle the life on proper way. If the rhetoric of Madarsa is not changed on urgent basis, the legendry education system might get muffled under the influence of glamorous education fields and subjects.
