Major Earthquake hits Kishanganj, Sikkim & entire North East

Kishanganj, Katihar, Siliguri including the entire north-east region of India experienced major earthquake today evening. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Richter Scale had badly affected the state of Sikkim. As per sources, the epicenter of the earthquake was around 68 km away from Sikkim’s capital city Gangtok. The quake was centred on Sikkim – Nepal border, and the worst affected areas are Kathmandu (Nepal), Jhapa (Nepal), Bhadrapur (Nepal), and all parts of Sikkim.


Television reports have said that 9 people have lost their lives in Nepal, but no confirmed report has been received about casualty in Sikkim. Four Air Force helicopters are ready including two each at Bagdogra Airport and Guwahati Airport to provide assistance in Sikkim.

The tremors have also been felt in Darjeeling, Siliguri, Guwahati, Araria, Kolkata, Purnia, and many parts of Bihar and Jharkhand. Along with Delhi & NCR, many areas on Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal shook with low magnitude earthquake. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake - which hit at 6.10 pm - was located at a depth of 10 kilometre on the Sikkim-Nepal border, 68 kilometres northwest of Gangtok. Two aftershocks of 4.8 and 4.6 magnitude also hit Sikkim, minutes after the first quake.


As per the latest report, no casualty has been reported from any part of Kishanganj, Seemanchal and other areas of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. However, as per television reports two buildings have been collapsed in Katihar, and three buildings have been damaged in Patna, the capital of Bihar. More reports are awaited. Let us pray for the affected people and quick recovery from the nature’s big shock.
