Bahadurganj - A Suburb of Kishanganj District

Bahadurganj – literally meaning the ‘land of fighter or warrior’ is a suburban town of Kishanganj district, just 25 kms. from the district headquarters. One of the four assembly constituencies of Kishanganj, Bahadurganj is also a block. Bahadurganj is located in northern part of Kishanganj, and sharing its boundary with neighbouring country of Nepal. Geographically, Bahadurganj is situated 26°16′N 87°49′E / 26.27°N 87.82°E / 26.27; 87.82 at an elevation of about 51 metres from sea level. The male/ female ration in Bahadurganj is 53:47, while the average literacy rate is 34% only that is much lower that the national average and overall percentage of Bihar.


Bahadurganj comprises of many villages including the popular hats (Bazaars), namely Bishanpur, Tulsia, Lohagara and Dighalbank. The suburb of Bahadurganj itself has a good market, where you can find shops dealing in various items including showrooms of motorcycles, electronic gadgets, clothes and medicines. There is also a government hospital, post office, banks (SBI, Central Bank), government run High School called Russell High School, government Middle School and primary school. There are many private schools and hospitals in Bahadurganj as well.

The small suburb of Bahadurganj is similar in all aspects to other parts of Kishanganj including culture, lifestyle, and environment as well. People of Bahadurganj area lead a simple life, and the common clothing is lungi & kurta (shirt or pehraan) for men, and females wear sarees or salwar suit. Some of the famous villages of Bahadurganj include Satal, Baigana, Saranda, Sikhtiyaar, Palasmani, Goabari, Jhiljhili, etc.

It is worth to mention about Gopalpur village, which just 2 km ahead of Bahadurganj town on Kishanganj – Bahadruganj road. The village has given a good contribution in education upliftment of Bahadurganj including Kishanganj district as well. The Hamara School at Gopalpur has been a renowned school since its establishment, and students studied in the school have achieved many milestones in their career. Khalilur Rahman (former SDO), Dr. Ozair Alam (Asst. Professor – Hamdard University) are some of the luminaries of Gopalpur.


People of Bahadurganj area is mainly involved in agriculture and cultivate rice, wheat, maize and many seasonal crops. A small portion of the total population is also involved in seasonal and permanent business. While the educated class is mainly employed in government schools as teachers, and some of them have done professional courses like MBBS, B.Tech, MBA, MSW, Journalism, and other contemporary courses. Few of the locals of Bahadurganj after completion of MBBS have established their own clinics in the suburban town and its main haats.

Politically Bahadurganj is an assembly (Vidhan Sabha) constituency, and as per Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies Order, 2008, No 52 Bahadurganj (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is composed of the following: Bahadurganj and Terhagachh community development blocks; Patharghatti, Ghangra and Lachhmipur gram panchayats of Dighalbank CD Block. Bahadurganj (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is part of No 10 Kishanganj (Lok Sabha constituency). Md. Tousif Alam of Congress is the MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) from Bahadurganj constituency for two consecutive terms. He has defeated Maswar Alam of JD (U) and Zahidur Rahman (Congress) in 2010 and 2005 respectively.

How to Reach Bahadurganj
The suburban of Bahadurganj and its areas are will linked by roads. You can take a bus, mini bus, jeep or drive yourself to Bahadurganj. The suburban town is about 25 kms. away from district headquarters of Kishanganj.

Accommodation in Bahadurganj
Some hotels offer accommodation facility in Bahadurganj. However, it is good to stay in hotels of Kishanganj district headquarters, especially Hotel Jyoti. In fact, you can easily cover the suburb of Bahadurganj in one full day.
