Educate Kishanganj Series: Key Reasons behind poor Literacy

0
We are in the 21st century, but education is still a big taboo in the district of Kishanganj. The 2001 census report says that only 32 percent people of the district are literate out of this 42.8 percent males were literate, while 18.49 percent females were educated (the lowest female literacy in India). The literacy rate is very dismal among Muslims, and only 2 percent Muslim females were literate.

Although the literacy rate statics shows around 42 persons educated out of 100 people, but in truth only 10 out of 100 people have got proper education. The rest are only able to do their signature, but they have never attended school. So, you can understand how much the district is lagging behind in the field of education in comparison to other parts of Bihar (47.53 percent education) and India (64.84 percent education).

There are many reasons behind the poor condition of education in Kishanganj:-

- First and foremost, the economic condition of the common people is not very good. Hence, instead of sending their children to schools or colleges, the less literate parents / wards send them for working on the fields or other types of works. Thousands of them migrate towards the national capital Delhi, or other places like Mumbai, Ludhiana, Kolkata and Guwahati in search of livelihood. Even the educated parents / wards show less interest to educate their children. And expect some kind of earning from them.

- The 15 years of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s government in Bihar is another big reason behind the poor literacy condition in Kishanganj. During his governance, Lalu tried his best to keep the people of Bihar less literate and made English an optional subject. Except appointment of few primary and high school teachers, Laloo Prasad Yadav didn’t offer any type of employment to educate youth that in turn decreased the interest of education. The college staff, madarsa teachers and other educated employed suffered a lot during Lalu’s governance.

- Once the home of famous Insan School, Kishanganj badly missed a good and economic educational institute in the past decades. Although many educational institutes came into existence, but they were more interested in money making rather than offering quality education.

- The local politicians even some educated political leaders took less interest in promoting education in the district. Fact is that, a couple of political leaders who made the literacy their principal election agenda, didn’t fulfilled their promise. So, these leaders totally failed and shatter the hope of improving the literacy situation in Kishanganj.

- A fair portion of government teachers teaching in Primary/ Middle / High Schools are also responsible for the dismal education condition. Instead of providing proper education, the teachers were and even today more fascinated towards passing leisure times in the school. The misuse of government funds also encourages them to be dishonest. The condition is almost similar in the government colleges of the district.

- The rich people of Kishanganj district and also those who have made a special mark for themselves in various professions in India and abroad, show little interest to uplift the educationally deprived people of Kishanganj. There are more than 1000 of people who are billionaire and well placed in UK, US or Gulf, if they contribute a little by opening new schools, the situation can be better.
