SCAMISTAN: Country of Rogue Politicians and Weak Bureaucrats

All round scam in this country. Commission after commission, investigation after investigation! But there is no ending. What has happened to this country? Electronic media has ever been celebrating since their slots are filled up. Analyst finds good opportunity to demonstrate their talent and expertise on governance. Spectators are too enjoying their time because they need not add spices to their spare time. Not only in favorite time pass locations but in offices too people are gossiping all about corruption. We have become too tolerant and thick skinned to get surprised by chain of scams. Can anybody guess how many investigations are running now? How many of them are protracted for decades? How many agencies are there for investigation such cases? Answer to this may be in dozens but what is the conviction rate? All the pillars of democracy including the fourth pillar are involved in this sinister game. In this context, is it not appropriate to call this country SCAMISTAN?

For all our system failure and deplorable plight in this country, the blame goes to the politicians entirely. Is it politicians who only needs to be blamed? It is easy to blame politician but very futile. It is we who elect politicians as our leader; they come and go or stay longer on their merit and ability to manage their populism. Most of their traits are same irrespective of their religion, caste, sect, region etc. When many of us are not even bothered to exercise our franchise and select the right candidate, how can we blame them? Politicians alone cannot carry out mega scams unless the bureaucracy supports them. Onus of providing efficient governance lies on the shoulders of bureaucrats since they are not only the implementing authority but have great power in influencing the policy decision.

These problems (of corruption and scam cases) can be minimized to large extent if the permanent part of government (bureaucracy) refuses to yield to politicians. It seems the bureaucrats have lost all the will power and courage to resist. The bureaucrats have lost all the controls because of the lust of obsessive materialist gain and lure of power and being afraid of sidelined in the corner room. The bureaucracy has never been so weak. These bureaucrats are the product of our society only. The greatest question is whether our education system has totally collapsed to impart the basic values of honesty, integrity and humility. We have to introspect.
